This study constructed a chain model of parental influence (PI)–physical activity (PA)–perceived leisure and sports experience (PSE) to explore family influence and gender differences in college students’ leisure-related behaviors and their psychological mechanisms, and explicitly conceptualized physical activity as a leisure practice in accordance with reviewer recommendations.
A valid sample of 936 Chinese college students (622 males and 314 females) was collected through a questionnaire survey, and empirical tests were conducted using analysis of variance (ANOVA), structural equation modeling (SEM), and multi-group bootstrapping.
The results revealed gender differences in college students’ physical activity and perceived leisure and sports experience, with males reporting higher levels overall. Parental influence (PI) significantly promoted college students’ perceived leisure and sports experience (PSE) through physical activity (PA), although the mediating effect was small compared to the direct effect. In addition, the positive effect of physical activity on perceived leisure and sports experience was more pronounced among females.
Parental influence exerts a sustained impact on adult children’s perceived leisure and sports experience. The study reveals pathways through which gender role concepts shape leisure experience via differentiated empowerment mechanisms and provides a theoretical basis for family-based sport and leisure policy interventions. Furthermore, this study situates physical activity within the broader leisure context, emphasizing that parental influence not only promotes participation but also shapes students’ leisure choices and overall well-being.
