Abstract

The purpose of this study was to identify the integrated structural relationships among achievement-oriented motivation, failure-avoidance motivation, team belongingness, and exercise engagement among Chinese university table tennis players. Data were collected from 622 table tennis players (391 males, 231 females) currently competing at universities in China. The collected data were analyzed using SPSS and AMOS statistical software, employing descriptive statistics, correlation analysis, and structural equation modeling (SEM). The results showed that all goodness-of-fit indices for the SEM were met acceptable criteria. First, achievement-oriented motivation had a positive effect on team belongingness. Second, failure-avoidance motivation did not have a significant effect on team belongingness. Third, achievement-oriented motivation positively influenced exercise engagement. Fourth, failure-avoidance motivation negatively influenced exercise engagement. Fifth, team belongingness had a positive effect on exercise engagement. Sixth, achievement-oriented motivation indirectly influenced exercise engagement through team belongingness. Lastly, failure-avoidance motivation did not show a significant indirect effect on exercise engagement through team belongingness. In conclusion, the results of this study indicate that the level of team belongingness and exercise engagement among Chinese university table tennis players may differ depending on their achievement motivation type. This suggests that managing athletes' achievement motivation and strategies to enhance team belongingness are crucial factors in improving exercise engagement.
