Changes in the aviation market due to changes in the leisure environment : Comparative Analysis of Aviation Performance and the Cabin Crew Employment Market Before and After the COVID-19 Pandemic

Abstract

This study investigates how transformations in the leisure environment, intensified by the COVID-19 pandemic, reshaped the global and Korean airline markets, particularly in long-haul travel demand and cabin crew employment. Recognizing the pandemic as a structural shock to both leisure behavior and aviation labor systems, the research aims to provide empirical insights for corporate and policy resilience.

A systematic literature review integrated with AI-based machine learning information retrieval was conducted using official data from IATA, ICAO, and national aviation authorities. Analysis covered three phases— pre-pandemic expansion (2015–2019), shock and adaptation (2020–2021), and rebound (2022–2024)—across five global regions and Korean carriers.

Results show global revenue passenger kilometers fell by 22% during 2020–2021 but recovered to 88.9% of pre-pandemic levels by 2024. Passenger load factors rebounded from 66.0% to 81.5%, paralleling cabin-crew rehiring across major airlines. In Korea, Full-Service Carriers showed a V-shaped recovery, while Low-Cost Carriers rapidly expanded through adaptive recruitment.

These findings highlight how post-pandemic leisure behavior redefined airline market stability and employment patterns, offering strategic implications for corporate management, labor policies, and national aviation planning under future global disruptions.
