Abstract

This study aims to explore the association between companion types and participants' flow and enjoyment in risk-taking marine leisure sports (scuba diving and surfing). Data were collected from 813 participants. To ensure the reliability and validity of the measurement tools, a Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) was conducted using the Short Flow Scale (SFS-2) and adapted enjoyment inventories. Subsequently, following a multiple regression analysis, a hierarchical regression analysis was employed to control for demographic variables (gender, age, marital status, and sport type) and to re-examine the predictive power of companion types. The analysis revealed that participating with a spouse or coworkers had a significantly positive (+) association with flow. Regarding enjoyment, coworkers, spouses, and club/small groups demonstrated positive (+) associations, whereas participating with siblings showed a significantly negative (-) association. Participating alone did not exhibit a significant association with either flow or enjoyment. Notably, a lower age showed a significant positive association with flow. These exploratory findings demonstrate that in challenging marine sports environments requiring safety measures, leisure with coworkers and spouses fosters positive psychological experiences and camaraderie. Conversely, sibling companionship may hinder intrinsic enjoyment due to unconscious rivalry. This study provides practical implications, such as activating workplace leisure programs and establishing segmented youth education systems based on companion characteristics.
