Development and Content Validation of a Ski Skill Grade System

Abstract

This study developed a ski skill grade system designed to support progressive skill development among recreational skiers and continuity of instruction across instructors and settings. A draft was constructed from Korean ski manuals, educational materials, KSIA documents, and related literature using seven criteria: prerequisite relation, hierarchy, continuity, representativeness, educational relevance, assessability, and linkage with KSIA levels. Seven development-panel members first completed independent written reviews, after which six members participated in a structured consensus process based on the Modified Nominal Group Technique. Content validity was then examined by 13 experts who had not participated in the development process. The final system comprised nine general skill grades—Snowplow, Snowplow Turn, Stem, Basic Long Turn, Basic Short Turn, Dynamic Long Turn, Dynamic Short Turn, Carving Long Turn, and Carving Short Turn—and two specialized areas, Gate and Mogul. Across 43 items, I-CVI values ranged from .846 to 1.000 and the S-CVI/Ave was .971. The system was organized as a learning pathway linking current achievement with subsequent learning tasks rather than as a simple ranking of technical difficulty. Comparison with overseas systems was used to discuss the educational meaning of the proposed structure and issues for implementation. Further work should specify slope conditions, turn size and number, observable performance criteria, and passing standards, followed by field-based validation.
