Abstract

This study explored leisure facilitators and leisure constraint negotiation in the recreation specialization process of middle-aged women swimmers. Five women aged 40 to 60, each with more than ten years of swimming experience, current participation at least four times per week, and competition experience, participated in semi-structured in-depth interviews. Data were analyzed using qualitative thematic analysis. The findings indicated that the participants’ recreation specialization process involved seven stages: interest, entry, maintenance I, transitional experience, activation, maintenance II, and adjustment. Leisure facilitators, including health management needs, social support, structured lessons, competitions, records, club activities, and video feedback, supported participation, continuation, and deepening. Participants also experienced constraints such as fear of water, skill difficulties, childcare, relational fatigue, record pressure, injury, and physical decline. These constraints were negotiated through time rearrangement, relationship regulation, goal modification, and adjustment of participation intensity. The findings suggest that recreation specialization is a dynamic process in which facilitators, constraints, and negotiation interact to sustain and reconfigure participation.
