Abstract

This study examined the meanings of leisure among parents of children with disabilities who use community disability sport facilities, using a photovoice approach. Five parents were recruited through purposive, snowball sampling at a local disability sport center. Following established photovoice procedures, participants captured everyday images on their mobile phones prior to one-to-one interviews. Data collection and analysis proceeded through three stages. Through iterative comparison and category development, three interpretive domains were identified. First, the meanings attached to parents’ leisure participation were expressed as “awkward or uncomfortable words,” “repositories of cherished memories,” and “mirrors of relative deprivation.” Second, perceived constraints comprised “fragmented downtime,” “time marked by guilt,” and “enduring challenge and waiting.” Third, facilitators included “family help and practical support,” “attentiveness and consideration from peers and acquaintances,” and “the child’s visible growth and change.” Parents’ perceptions of their role in supporting their child’s physical activity were articulated as “a task assigned to me,” “one constraint among many to be overcome,” and “a locus of hope for the child.” Implications and directions for future research are discussed.
