Abstract

This study aims to compare and analyze the changes in sports tourism trends before (2015–2019) and after (2021–2024) the COVID-19 pandemic using academic data (RISS) and media data (BIGKinds). It seeks to explore the impact of this global crisis on the sports tourism industry and academic discourse, identifying major changes and implications that have emerged. The analysis reveals that pre-pandemic sports tourism was characterized by large-scale sports events and region-based tourism content. Academic data focused on economic effects and policy support, while media data highlighted successful tourism cases to capture public attention. In contrast, post-pandemic trends emphasized safety, sustainability, digital transformation, and experiential content as key themes. Notably, both academic and media data underscored the importance of regional focus, experiential content, and policy support, demonstrating a complementary relationship between academic and public discourses. These findings suggest that COVID-19 presented unprecedented challenges and opportunities for the sports tourism industry and research. To adapt to new societal demands in the post-pandemic era, the sports tourism industry must strengthen policies centered on environmental protection and sustainability, leverage digital technologies, and develop region-specific content. This study provides practical insights into the recovery and sustainable development of the sports tourism industry, offering a valuable foundation for future policy-making and research.
