Analyzing News Discourse on Leisure among Multicultural Migrants

Abstract

This study aims to analyze how the discourse surrounding leisure activities and social integration of multicultural migrants is constructed in South Korean news media. Utilizing the Big KINDS platform provided by the Korea Press Foundation, a total of 19,021 news articles published between January 2023 and February 2025 containing keywords such as “multicultural,” “migrant,” and “leisure” were collected and analyzed. After preprocessing the text data through morpheme analysis and stopword removal, Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) was applied to identify latent topic structures. To determine the optimal number of topics, three evaluation metrics—Coherence Score, Held-out Likelihood, and Lower Bound—were used, and six topics were identified as optimal. The extracted topics were interpreted as: (1) multicultural leisure policies and local government discussions, (2) family integration of marriage migrants, (3) educational adaptation of multicultural youth, (4) community-based inclusion activities, (5) integrated welfare and leisure services, and (6) global festivals and cultural exchanges. The findings suggest that leisure serves as a medium for social inclusion and cultural interaction for multicultural migrants. This study offers empirical insights into how news discourse reflects and shapes public understanding of multicultural leisure and suggests directions for inclusive policy development.
