Abstract

The purpose of this study was to analyze recreation conflicts that the elderly experienced when walking. Snowball sampling method was employed for the study and 6 senior citizens aged more than 65 were selected as interviewees. There were two or three sessions of in-depth interviews with those through semi structured interview and all contents of the interviews were recorded and transcribed. Inductive categorical analysis was employed for drawing the result of this study. The factors causing the elderly's recreation conflict when walking could largely be divided into interpersonal conflict through direct contact and social values conflict through indirect contact. In-group activity style and out-group safety fell into the category of the former while in-group lifestyle tolerance and out-group lifestyle tolerance were concerned with the latter. It is important to note that the elderly who participated in walking, a form of traditional recreation had social values conflict due to the people with dogs and new equipment users as well as recreation conflict resulting from goal interference.
