Abstract

The purpose of this study was to identify problems with the ski instruction method used in Korean ski education fields through analysis of instructor training manuals used in ski schools and to suggest a developmental direction for educational materials that can supplement them. Instruction manuals from 5 ski schools was collected and analysed. As a result, the problems with the manual were divided into technical and pedagogical aspects. The problem in terms of technology were as follow. It did not utilize the characteristics of modern ski equipment, and used a dichotomous turn structure based on the traditional Arlberg technique. In addition, it emphasized the use of internal force centered on the flexion and extension movement of the lower body, that was, the vertical movement. The problem in terms of teaching method were as follow. There was no content that can convey the principles of skiing, and a form/motion-centered teaching method centered on demonstration was used. It required perfect beginner skills from beginners and abuses unnecessary jargon. Additionally, there was a lack of content related to the attitude instructors should have as ski instructors.
