Abstract

The purpose of this study is to determine predictors of exercise and physical activity time of elementary and middle school students and figure out the differences in these predictors between two groups. To investigate the research problems, first year data of 4th grade and 7th grade panels from the Korean Children and Youth Panel Survey 2018 was used for analysis. This data went through hierarchical multiple regression analysis using the SPSS 23.0 program. As a result, gender was the strongest predictor for exercise and physical activity time, with female students spending less time in exercise and physical activity than male students. For individual factors, perseverance showed significance with a higher perseverance leading to more exercise and physical activity with elementary and middle school students. Smartphone dependency was also significant for both groups and showed decreasing exercise and physical activity time with increased dependency on smartphones. For school factors, friendship was significant for both groups and better relationships resulted in more time spent in exercise and physical activities.
